The Brownsville Literacy Center is committed to adult literacy. Many people are probably not aware of the center’s Family Literacy Program, which is designed for preschoolers and their mothers – though fathers are also encouraged to apply.

Moms attend class upstairs for half the morning, while the little ones are taught basic preschool skills in their downstairs classroom; then the moms join their children for the second half of the morning to participate in more learning activities together.

The Children at the Literacy Center held their own Earth Day celebration on Thursday, April 22, 2010. The Literacy Center is now recycling aluminum cans and using the proceeds to buy much need items. The trash cans were donated by Healthy Communities of Brownsville and the kids painted and decorated them with their own special ideas. The bulletin board is the pride of the Center will remain up till end of term.
