The Health Trendbenders are a group of volunteers pursuing the health mission of HCB. The current projects of the Health TrendBender group focus on our youth and prevention of various conditions and diseases that affect them

Our goals are to:

1. Improve the health literacy of the community.

2. Reduce health problems facing children and youth.

3. Promote the health and wellness of the community.

To this end, the Health TrendBenders have:

Worked to institutionalize the CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) program in all local elementary schools to combat obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Initiated the Healthy Food Choice project, partnering with local restaurants to improve the nutritional health and awareness of residents through the offering of healthy food choices.

Completed a study of teenage pregnancy in Brownsville, using parent focus groups to gather data on talking to adolescents about sex and other difficult topics. The outcomes of the research will be used to develop a culturally appropriate curriculum.

Host an Annual Health Literacy Symposium to improve the health literacy and advocacy skills among Brownsville citizens working with the Brownsville Independent School District and the City of Brownsville.
