Education Trendbenders
The Education TrendBenders are a group of volunteers pursuing the education mission of HCB. Our energies and activities focus on addressing the issue of high drop-out rates in Brownsville with the following goals:
1. Increasing the number of students who graduate from high school and who go on to pursue higher education.
2. Providing support and options for at-risk students so they can reach their educational potential.
With these goals in mind, the Education TrendBender Group has:
Implemented the MENTOR BROWNSVILLE program based on the "40 Assets" philosophy and the PASARLA BIEN Wraparound program.
The MENTOR BROWNSVILLE program matches at-risk students with caring, reliable adult volunteers from the community. The purpose of the program is to provide a path to college for Brownsville students by providing them with postiive role models and with the information they need to reach their educational potential.
HCB has launched the PASARLA BIEN program at a local middle school with plans to expand into an elementary school. The program combines teacher training on Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) with mental health services for students with identified behavior and emotional problems. The program serves as a filter that allows the mentally healthy students to go about the business of learning and growing, while the youth in need of extra services are directed to those services. Students with behavior and emotional problems are provided with “wrap-around” services to address parent functioning, youth functioning, and educational intervention.
