About Healthy Communities of Brownsville, Inc.

Healthy Communities of Brownsville, Inc. (HCB) was founded in 2001 as the "Healthy Communities Initiative," incorporated in 2002, and became a 501(C)3 non-profit corporation in 2003. The organization came together during 10 community meetings during which a process was agreed upon to organize and proceed.

Our Mission: To promote the well being of our community. HCB is operated for charitable purposes in the public interest and uses its net proceeds to maintain, improve and expand its operations.

Our Vision: To live in a Healthy, Clean and Beautiful city.

Our Values: HCB makes a difference through: creativity, diversity, accountability, collaboration, and leadership.

Our activities focus in three areas: education, health and environment. We believe that each of these areas falls under the definition of 'health' in a broad, holistic sense. Our initiatives and projects are funded through a three-year grant from the Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas.

The group of concerned Brownsville citizens that joined together in 2001 to address community health issues have since dedicated many hours of volunteer time and resources to implement the solutions they developed.

The more than 100 founding members came from neighborhoods, churches, businesses, educational institutions, healthcare entities, government agencies and other community groups. The concern and dedication of these Brownsville citizens led to the establishment of a broad-based, collaborative organization.
